Gardaí Warn of WhatsApp Scam Using Garda Crest to Target Bank Details
Gardaí warn of WhatsApp scam using Garda crest to target bank details. Never disclose personal information over the phone.
An Garda Síochána has issued a warning about scammers impersonating members of the force through WhatsApp calls, using the organisation's official crest as their profile photo to obtain personal banking information.
Gardaí have become aware of attempted fraud incidents where criminals are contacting members of the public via WhatsApp whilst posing as members of An Garda Síochána.
The scammers are using An Garda Síochána's crest as their WhatsApp profile photo in an attempt to appear legitimate during calls aimed at obtaining personal information, including bank account details.
An Garda Síochána has issued the following advice to protect yourself from these scams: be suspicious of unsolicited messages or calls, and never disclose personal details over the phone.
If you receive a cold call from someone claiming to be a member of An Garda Síochána requesting bank details or your PPS number, ask them for their credentials and ring their Garda station to verify their identity.
Anyone who has been the victim of this or any other scam should contact their bank or financial institution immediately and report the incident to Gardaí.
If you believe you have engaged with such a scam, contact your local Garda station.
