Gardaí Urge Caution on Cork Roads as Yellow Weather Warning Takes Effect

An Garda Síochána is urging drivers across Cork and several other counties to take extra care on the roads as Met Éireann's Status Yellow weather warning brings heavy rain, strong winds, and the risk of flooding this Tuesday night into Wednesday.

The warning covers Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Cork, Tipperary, and Waterford, with Gardaí warning that difficult travelling conditions are expected due to flooding and poor visibility on already saturated ground.

Gardaí are specifically highlighting the issue of inappropriate speed, noting that driving too fast for prevailing road and weather conditions is just as dangerous as exceeding the posted speed limit, and puts both the driver and other road users at risk.

Surface water levels have been set to ELEVATED across Cork, Cavan, Longford, Offaly, and Westmeath, while HIGH surface water levels are in place for Monaghan, Louth, Meath, Dublin, Wicklow, Kildare, Wexford, Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Tipperary, and Waterford.

From 23:00 tonight, Tuesday 17 February, a Status Yellow Wind Warning comes into effect for Wexford, Wicklow, Dublin, Meath, and Louth. Strong and gusty southeasterly winds, combined with high tides, may lead to wave overtopping, fallen trees, loose debris, and difficult travelling conditions. That warning remains valid until 13:00 on Wednesday 18 February 2026.

A separate Status Yellow Rain Warning covers Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Cork, Tipperary, and Waterford. Rain falling on already saturated ground, combined with high river levels, is expected to cause flooding, poor visibility, and hazardous conditions on the roads.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for journeys, reduce speed, and be prepared for disruption to travel networks and transport routes throughout the warning period.
