Gardaí to Deploy 390 New Speed Camera Zones Across Ireland from January

An Garda Síochána will activate 390 new safety camera zones from 1st January 2026, bringing the total number of speed enforcement locations nationwide to 1,901. Cork will see 30 new zones, including 12 requested by local communities.

The expansion comes as Ireland records 186 road deaths in 2025, the highest level in over a decade, marking a tragic reversal of the downward trend seen between 2000 and 2021.

Safety cameras operate in areas with a history of speed-related collisions. All zones are published on the Garda website and available for GPS navigation providers to download.

Assistant Commissioner Catharina Gunne, Roads Policing and Community Engagement said:

"The majority of drivers on Irish roads obey the speed limits, keeping themselves, their passengers and other road users safer. There is a small persistent cohort of selfish, dangerous drivers who choose to drive in excess of the posted speed limit. These drivers put themselves and members of their community at risk, particularly children, older people, cyclists and other motorists."

She added that GoSafe vans operate in areas with speed-related collision history where fatal, serious injury and minor injury collisions occur. Locations highlighted by communities as areas of concern have also been included in the new zones.

Cork's 30 new zones include 12 community request locations, identified through concerns raised by local residents and observations by local Gardaí. These community requests are reviewed by the Office of Safety Camera Management and assessed by GoSafe area managers for suitable deployment locations.

The safety camera system has operated since 2010, when An Garda Síochána contracted GoSafe to run marked mobile camera vans. Road deaths decreased from 415 in 2000 to 132 in 2021, but recent years have seen a tragic upward trend.

Members of the public with concerns about speeding in their area can contact their local Garda station.
