Gardaí Target Human Trafficking Networks in Major International Operation

An Garda Síochána joined forces with law enforcement agencies worldwide during the first week of June in a coordinated crackdown on human trafficking networks across Ireland, resulting in one arrest and the inspection of over 5,000 passengers at Dublin Airport.

Between 1st and 6th June 2025, Operation Global Chain targeted organised crime groups involved in human trafficking for sexual exploitation, forced criminality and forced begging. The intensive week-long operation saw gardaí conduct welfare visits to suspected brothels nationwide while simultaneously monitoring international flights for potential trafficking activity.

The Garda National Protective Services Bureau coordinated with Divisional Protective Services Units across Ireland to inspect 92 brothels in every major town and city. During these visits, officers interviewed 179 sex workers representing diverse nationalities including Brazil, Romania, Spain, China, Dominican Republic, Poland, Latvia, Colombia, Taiwan, Panama, Czech Republic, Malaysia and Ireland.

While no victims of human trafficking were detected during this particular operation, all individuals interviewed received information and advice about available support services should they wish to speak with gardaí in future.

At Dublin Airport on Thursday 5th and Friday 6th June, members of the Human Trafficking Investigation and Coordination Unit and the Organised Prostitution Investigation Unit conducted enhanced checks alongside the Border Management Unit. The operation monitored 37 flights and inspected 5,421 arriving passengers.

The week's activities yielded one significant arrest in connection with an ongoing human trafficking investigation. A male suspect was detained at Monaghan Garda Station under Organised Crime legislation for alleged sexual exploitation and forced criminality. Following his detention, the Director of Public Prosecutions directed a charge under Section 4(1) of the Criminal Law (Human Trafficking) Act 2008.

The accused appeared before Monaghan District Court on Wednesday 11th June, where he was remanded in custody. A full file is now being compiled for the DPP.

An Garda Síochána emphasised their continued commitment to working with Europol and international law enforcement partners to identify new victims and remove them from harm. The operation formed part of EMPACT (European Multidisciplinary Platform Against Criminal Threats), which provides an integrated approach to EU internal security through coordinated border controls, police cooperation and intelligence sharing.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may be a victim of human trafficking or sexual exploitation to come forward and speak with them, either at a local garda station or by calling the Garda Confidential Phone Number on 1800 666 111. They also urge anyone with information about these crimes to contact them, with all communications treated in the utmost confidence.
