Gardaí Launch Permanent High Visibility Policing Plan for Cork City Centre
48 additional officers and patrols from 8am to 4am daily.
An Garda Síochána has today launched a permanent High Visibility Policing Plan for Cork City Centre, with 48 additional Gardaí now assigned to the Cork City Division to boost the visible police presence on the streets.
The operation, which begins today, Monday 24 November 2025, will see 23 Gardaí deployed daily across 11 designated posts and beats throughout the city centre. Eleven officers will patrol during daytime hours, with 12 covering the night shift, ensuring a continuous Garda presence between 8am and 4am.
The locations were selected following feedback from the community and local businesses, as well as Garda crime data. Officers will maintain a visible presence at each post throughout operating hours to provide reassurance to the public and respond promptly to incidents.
The plan takes a robust approach to tackling public order offences, anti-social behaviour, drug dealing, aggressive begging, and shoplifting. Gardaí have confirmed a pro-arrest policy for repeat offenders, with strong bail objections where appropriate.
The foot patrols will be supported by the Cork City Garda Roads Policing Unit, the Public Order Unit, and detective and plain clothes officers. Community Policing Gardaí will also deploy the Garda Community Engagement Van to locations around the city to offer crime prevention advice to residents and businesses.
Assistant Commissioner Eileen Foster, Southern Region:
"Forty eight additional Gardaí have been assigned to the Cork City Division, which will support this High Visibility Policing Plan. These High Visibility foot patrols in Cork City Centre increase Garda visibility and offer public reassurance that public realms and amenities in Cork City Centre are and continue to be safe places to live, visit, socialise, conduct business and enjoy."
Chief Superintendent Thomas Myers, Cork City Division:
"I am delighted with the allocation of 48 additional Gardaí to the Cork City Division. This is an acknowledgement that Cork City needed additional resources and we look forward to High Visibility patrols particularly in the build up to Christmas."
