Gardaí are investigating a fatal assault that occurred in Cork city centre last night and are appealing for witnesses, including taxi drivers and motorists, to come forward.

The incident took place on Lower John Street, Knapps Square and Devonshire Street on Monday, 16 March 2026. Gardaí and emergency services responded to a reported assault at approximately 7.50pm.

A man, in his 30s, was subsequently declared deceased at a domestic residence on Carroll's Quay. His remains have been removed to Cork University Hospital. The Office of the State Pathologist has been notified and a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

A Senior Investigating Officer has been appointed to lead the investigation and an incident room has been established at Watercourse Road Garda Station. A Family Liaison Officer has been assigned to support the family of the deceased.

Gardaí are particularly keen to speak with taxi drivers and motorists who were in the area at the time. Anyone who was in the Devonshire Street, Knapps Square or Lower John Street areas of Cork city on Monday, 16 March 2026 between 7.30pm and 9pm and who may have camera footage, including home security and dash-cam, is asked to provide this to investigating Gardaí.
