Full Weekend Closure of N28 Planned for July as Temporary Bridge Installed at Maryborough Hill
N28 full weekend closure at Maryborough Hill due in July, 10 to 12 or 17 to 19, for temporary bridge installation. Local and HGV diversions will be signposted.
A full weekend closure of the N28 will take place in July as part of the M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Motorway Scheme, to allow for the installation of a temporary bridge at Maryborough Hill.
The closure will take place on either the weekend of 10 to 12 July or 17 to 19 July 2026, with the confirmed date to be issued three weeks in advance. The temporary structure is required to maintain traffic flow on Maryborough Hill Road while the new permanent overbridge is constructed.
In an announcement on Tuesday (9 June), the Port of Cork said the works will involve transporting the fully assembled temporary steel bridge to the site, followed by crane setup and lifting operations, and the placement and securing of the structure. Short temporary closures of Maryborough Hill itself will also take place during critical phases of the work.
Comprehensive diversion routes will be in place for both local traffic and HGVs, with all routes clearly signposted and emergency services notified in advance. Local residents and bus services along the route are also to be notified of the closure and restrictions.

Under the traffic management plans for the closure, local traffic will be diverted via the R610 through Douglas and Rochestown, with Clarke's Hill and Coach Hill linking the Rochestown Road back to Maryborough Hill near Broadale. All HGVs will be diverted via Junction 6 (Kinsale Road) on the N40, following the N27 and R600 past Cork Airport to Ballygarvan, then the R613 to Carrigaline and the R611 to rejoin the N28 at the Shannonpark Roundabout, a route which will bring HGV traffic through Carrigaline over the closure weekend. Existing overhead message signs on the N40 will advise drivers of the closure in advance.
The Port of Cork has encouraged port users, hauliers, logistics partners and commuters to plan ahead and allow additional time for journeys during the closure period, and said it will continue to work closely with contractor BAM and the project team. Further updates will be shared once the final closure weekend is confirmed.
