FSAI Expands SMA Infant Formula Recall Over Toxin Concerns
Parents advised not to feed affected batches to children.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has issued its fourth update to an ongoing recall of SMA infant formula and follow-on formula products, warning parents that additional batches possibly distributed to Ireland from the UK may contain cereulide toxin.
The FSAI issued the alert today, 13 January 2026, expanding the recall to include further SMA infant formula and follow-on formula batches beyond those identified in three previous updates issued under Food Alert 2026.01.
The recall concerns the possible presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. The FSAI warns that the toxin is extremely heat resistant and may be pre-formed in food products.
Consumption of foods containing cereulide toxin can lead to nausea and severe vomiting, with symptoms appearing within five hours. The duration of illness typically lasts between six and 24 hours.
What Parents Should Do
The FSAI is advising parents, guardians and caregivers not to feed the implicated batches to infants or young children.
Batch codes can be found on the base of the tin or box for powdered formulas, or on the base of the outer box and side or top of the container for ready-to-feed formulas.
Nestlé is advising customers who have purchased any of the affected batches to contact them via their online form at www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch by sharing a photo of the product and batch code, or by calling their careline on 1800 931 832.
Recall notices will be displayed at point-of-sale in retailers across Ireland.
Retailers have been requested to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices. Wholesalers and distributors are being asked to contact affected customers and recall the implicated batches.
The FSAI has published a list of affected batches and products, along with questions and answers about the recall, on their website.
