Freemount Water Mains Upgrade to Improve Reliability and Reduce Future Disruptions

Water mains upgrade begins in Freemount next week, with works set to improve reliability and reduce future supply disruptions.

Freemount Water Mains Upgrade to Improve Reliability and Reduce Future Disruptions

Uisce Éireann is progressing with a major upgrade of the local water network in Freemount, with 420 metres of ageing water mains set to be replaced as part of its national leakage reduction programme.

The existing pipes have been prone to bursts and supply interruptions, and their replacement marks an important step towards delivering a more reliable, resilient water supply for the local community.

Uisce Éireann acknowledged the impact that recent water supply interruptions have had on households and businesses in the area, thanking customers for their patience and understanding during a challenging period of outages and low water pressure.

Commenting on the works, Jack Cronin, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said the Freemount project forms part of a wider national effort to reduce leakage and strengthen the water network.

Jack Cronin, Programme Manager, Uisce Éireann:

“The works in Freemount form an important part of our national drive to reduce leakage and build a stronger, more resilient water network. By upgrading ageing infrastructure, we are helping to provide communities with a dependable water service that supports them every day. We know how important a reliable supply is, and we fully appreciate the impact recent outages have had on local households and businesses.”

Works will take place along Noonan Park and Allow Place and will include the installation of new service connections from the public water main to property boundaries. The project is due to begin next week and is expected to be completed by March 2026.

Ward and Burke Construction Ltd will carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Traffic management will be in place to ensure the safe delivery of the project, with local and emergency access maintained at all times.

While the upgrade is underway, some short-term planned water shut-offs may be required to support the works. Customers will receive at least 48 hours’ notice in advance, and crews will work to minimise disruption and restore normal service as quickly as possible.

The Freemount scheme is one of many projects nationwide aimed at reducing water loss. Ireland has over 65,000 kilometres of water pipes underground, much of it ageing infrastructure. National leakage levels have reduced from 49 per cent in 2014 to 36 per cent, the lowest level ever recorded, but further work remains ongoing.
