A free four-week education programme for people living with type 2 diabetes is now open to West Cork residents, with the HSE South West encouraging anyone affected by the condition to sign up and take part.

Discover Diabetes is run by registered dietitians and covers the key areas that matter most to people managing the condition: food, physical activity, blood glucose levels and medications. It is designed to cut through the often confusing and contradictory information found online, offering clear, practical guidance in a friendly, small-group setting.

More than 270,000 people in Ireland are currently living with type 2 diabetes, and many report feeling uncertain about where to find reliable advice after diagnosis.

Tim, a West Cork resident diagnosed in spring 2025, says the programme made a real difference to his confidence and daily life.

Tim, West Cork:

"I was confused when I was first diagnosed. There's so much information on the internet I could not get my head around it."

After completing the course, Tim lost weight, improved his blood sugar levels and says he now feels in control. "I have an active lifestyle now. I have normal food, not special meals. And the support keeps me motivated."

Courses run throughout the year with sessions starting regularly. People can take part shortly after diagnosis or many years on, and optional follow-up support is available after the four weeks to help participants keep up their progress.

In West Cork, sessions are held in Skibbereen, Clonakilty and Bantry.

Blaithin O'Neill, HSE Diabetes Specialist Senior Dietitian:

"Many people feel overwhelmed when they're diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Discover Diabetes gives people the tools and confidence they need to manage their health in a realistic and sustainable way."

Sarah McAleer, HSE General Manager, Integrated Healthcare Area lead for Enhanced Community Care:

"This free programme makes a real and lasting difference. We strongly encourage anyone living with type 2 diabetes to take part."

People can be referred by their GP, practice nurse or public health nurse, or they can self-register online.
