Free Heritage Site Access for Under-18s Launches Across Ireland This August

Free entry to heritage sites for all under-18s this August - perfect chance for Cork families to explore Ireland's castles, monuments and historic sites together.

Free Heritage Site Access for Under-18s Launches Across Ireland This August

The Office of Public Works has announced a pilot scheme offering free admission to all visitors under 18 at heritage sites nationwide throughout August 2025, expanding access to Ireland's cultural treasures during the summer holidays.

The initiative, running from 1st to 31st August, extends the existing free admission for under-12s to include teenagers, removing financial barriers that might prevent young people from exploring Ireland's rich historical heritage. The scheme covers all fee-paying OPW heritage sites except Kilmainham Gaol and Brú na Boinne.

Minister of State for the Office of Public Works, Kevin "Boxer" Moran announced the pilot programme, stating:

"I am delighted to announce that all under-18s will have free entry to OPW heritage sites this August, as part of a new pilot scheme. We are fortunate to have such incredible castles, monuments and historic properties across the country that are invaluable educational resources."

The Minister encouraged young people to take advantage of the opportunity, adding:

"I encourage all our young people to get out and explore their local heritage this summer. Our sites are the perfect backdrop to meet friends, explore a fascinating site and have a treat at the local café."

Cork families looking to explore further afield can choose from an impressive range of destinations. In County Tipperary, Roscrea Castle, Gardens and Damer House offers a magnificent stone motte castle, historic Damer House and impressive gardens perfect for a family day out.

For those willing to venture along the Wild Atlantic Way, The Blasket Centre provides insight into the literary heritage of the Blasket Islands, complete with dramatic views from a fully accessible clifftop viewing platform. Alternatively, families can discover Tudor architecture at Ormond Castle in Tipperary or learn about Ireland's first farmers at the Céide Fields in North Mayo.

Dublin attractions include the historic State Apartments at Dublin Castle, which chronicle over 1,000 years of the capital's history, and the Custom House Visitor Centre, where visitors can explore the stories behind this iconic landmark's building, burning and restoration.

The OPW heritage sites serve as educational resources designed to foster understanding of Ireland's past across all generations. The pilot scheme aims to ensure access for all by removing financial barriers during the peak summer period when families are most likely to visit.

All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult during their visit. The scheme represents an extension of the current free admission policy for under-12s, specifically designed to encourage teenage engagement with Ireland's cultural heritage.

Detailed itineraries for planning August visits are available on the Heritage Ireland website, offering options from day trips to weekday excursions and specialised themed tours suitable for all family interests.
