Free Diabetes Health Checks Coming to Bantry for World Diabetes Day
Free diabetes health checks at Bantry Primary Care Centre on 14 November, 11am to 2pm. Drop in for advice and support from the HSE diabetes team.
The HSE South West is offering free health checks and expert advice at Bantry Primary Care Centre on Friday, 14 November, as part of World Diabetes Day. The drop-in event runs from 11am to 2pm and is open to everyone, whether you're concerned about your risk or already living with the condition.
The West Cork diabetes integrated care team will be on hand to provide health checks, discuss risk factors, and offer practical support for managing diabetes. With approximately 309,000 people in Ireland living with diabetes, roughly 6% of the population, the initiative aims to catch risk factors early and empower people to take control of their health.
This year's World Diabetes Day theme focuses on putting well-being at the centre of diabetes care, recognising that balancing the condition with work, family, and daily life can be challenging.
Mari O'Donovan, Interim Head of Primary Care with HSE South West:
"World Diabetes Day is a great time to think about our health and lifestyle choices. These free health checks are not just about spotting the disease, it's about catching risk factors early and empowering people to take control of their health. Our team will be there to talk about foot care, healthy eating and local supports to help you live well. It's a friendly and relaxed way to get advice and take care of yourself."
Type 2 diabetes, which accounts for most cases in Ireland, is often linked to lifestyle factors and can sometimes be prevented through early intervention.
Fra Wiseman, Clinical Nurse Specialist in Diabetes Integrated Care with HSE South West:
"People are at risk of Type 2 diabetes if they have a family history of the condition, carry excess weight, especially around the abdomen, consume a diet high in processed foods, live a sedentary lifestyle, or have a history of gestational diabetes or pre-diabetes. High blood sugar over time can cause serious problems with your heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves."
Fra Wiseman added:
"Living with diabetes or being at risk of it can feel overwhelming at first. People need time, support, and clear information to understand what's happening and how to manage it. If you think you might have symptoms or just want to learn more, we'd love for you to drop by and have a friendly chat with our team on the day, no pressure, just support."
The free event takes place at Bantry Primary Care Centre on Friday, 14 November 2025, from 11am to 2pm. No appointment is necessary.
