The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) has brought together experts from across science, medicine, and communications to address the increasing challenge of misinformation in food safety, warning that inaccurate information can distort public risk perception and put health at risk.

The FSAI's Food Safety Consultative Council held an open meeting at the Convention Centre Dublin on Thursday, 5 March 2026, under the theme 'Navigating Misinformation in Food Safety'. Over 250 people registered for the event, which featured a keynote address from journalist and entrepreneur Mark Little, with the session chaired by author and journalist Suzanne Campbell.

Speakers examined how misinformation spreads, particularly in digital environments, and explored its consequences for consumer confidence, risk perception, and public health. Contributors included Professor Ciara Greene of UCD's School of Psychology, Dr Gary McGowan, Dr Claire Kilty from the Irish Cancer Society, and several senior FSAI figures.

Greg Dempsey, Chief Executive of the FSAI, said:

"In today's digital environment, misinformation can spread faster and further than ever before. When it comes to food safety, inaccurate or misleading information can distort risk, create unnecessary fear, and, in some cases, influence behaviours that may put public health at risk. As we navigate an increasingly complex information landscape, it is essential that food safety advice remains firmly grounded in science and communicated in a clear and transparent manner.

Addressing misinformation requires sustained effort, collaboration, and a strong commitment to protecting public trust. The FSAI remains committed to ensuring that consumers have access to accurate, evidence-based information to support informed decisions."

The FSAI's Food Safety Consultative Council, chaired by Jamie Knox, Vice President Global Beverage Concentrate Operations at Keurig Dr Pepper, meets quarterly to discuss food safety issues relevant to both industry and the general public. It comprises consumer, food industry, food inspectorate, and academic representatives.
