Food Recall Continues to Expand: Tesco Creamed Spinach Latest Addition to Listeria Alert

Food safety authorities have issued Update 3 to the major Ballymaguire Foods recall, adding Tesco Finest Creamed Spinach to the list of products being withdrawn due to possible Listeria contamination.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland released the third update to alert 2025.34 today, following previous updates issued this week. The premium side dish joins the extensive list of ready meals and prepared foods being removed from Irish supermarket shelves.

Tesco Finest Creamed Spinach across all pack sizes, batch codes and best before dates manufactured at establishment IE 4008 EC must be disposed of immediately. Consumers should check both fridges and freezers for this product and either dispose of it safely or return it to their Tesco store as directed by the retailer.

This update follows the previous additions which included Centra Freshly Prepared Chicken Massaman with Sticky Jasmine Rice in Update 1, and five Tesco products in Update 2 including Finest Chicken Parmigiano, Salmon with Lemon & Dill Sauce, Chicken Breast in Mushroom and Madeira Sauce, Baby Potatoes with Garlic & Herb Butter, and Meals Made Easy Chicken Korma.

The recall affects products across Tesco, SuperValu, Centra, Aldi and other retailers, covering ready meals, prepared dishes and side offerings from various product ranges.

Listeria monocytogenes presents health risks, particularly for pregnant women, babies, elderly individuals and those with compromised immune systems. Most people experience mild flu-like symptoms or gastrointestinal issues such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, though severe complications can occur in vulnerable populations.

The infection's incubation period averages three weeks but can range from three to 70 days, meaning symptoms may not develop immediately after consumption. Anyone who has consumed recalled products and feels unwell should consult their GP, especially those in high-risk categories.

Tesco stores are removing the Creamed Spinach from shelves and displaying point-of-sale notices alongside other recalled items. The retailer's premium Finest range has been affected across recent updates.

Consumers now have the option to return products to their point of purchase rather than only disposing of them, as retailers are processing the recall at store level.

Wholesalers, distributors and caterers must ensure immediate removal of all implicated products from their operations, as outlined in the standard recall procedures.
