€91,602 Approved for Flood Mitigation Works in Inchigeelagh
OPW approves €91,602 for flood mitigation works in Inchigeelagh. Tree and scrub clearing planned along 1,700m of riverbank on each side.
The Office of Public Works has approved funding of €91,602 for flood mitigation works in Inchigeelagh, West Cork, following an application from Cork County Council under the Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme.
Minister Kevin "Boxer" Moran announced today that the approved works will involve selectively clearing bankside trees and scrub along approximately 1,700 metres of riverbank on each side, stretching from Inchigeelagh Bridge to the footbridge.
The project is one of 62 applications by Cork County Council that have been supported under the scheme since its introduction in 2009, demonstrating the county's ongoing efforts to address localised flooding issues.
The Minor Flood Mitigation Works and Coastal Protection Scheme provides funding to local authorities for projects designed to address localised flooding and coastal protection problems that can be resolved within a short timeframe. The scheme applies to projects estimated to cost up to €750,000, with funding of up to 90 per cent available for approved works.
Applications are assessed by the OPW based on specific economic, social and environmental criteria, including cost benefit analysis. Local authorities must ensure that proposed works will not significantly impact flood risk in other areas.
The timing and progression of the approved works will be determined by Cork County Council.
