East Cork Road Closure Postponed to March Following Public Consultation
L3621 closure between Dark Road and Whitegate Road postponed to March-June 2026 following public consultation.
Cork County Council has postponed a temporary closure of the L3621 between the Dark Road and Whitegate Road until March 2026, following consultations with elected members and public submissions. The four-month closure will facilitate the completion of sustainable travel improvement works.
The Council originally advertised the proposed temporary road closure on 19 November 2025. However, following discussions with the Elected Members of East Cork Municipal District and a review of public submissions, the authority has amended its plans.
The temporary closure will now be in effect from March 2026 through to June 2026. During this period, traffic will be diverted via the R630 Whitegate Road and L3623 Dark Road.
The Council explained that every effort has been made to avoid the need for temporary road closures through careful phasing of the works, with maximum use of stop-go traffic systems. However, the constraints that exist on the junction of the R630 and L3621, and along the L3621 itself, make a temporary closure necessary to safely construct the works.
Cork County Council confirmed it will continue to work closely with Elected Members, the contractor and key stakeholders including the emergency services and members of the public in relation to this project.
The authority acknowledged the inconvenience the proposed temporary road closure may cause but emphasised its awareness of the long-term benefits that will be realised through the completion of the scheme.
Regarding works currently ongoing on the R630 Whitegate Road, the Council confirmed that signalisation will be maintained for road safety purposes, particularly for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians.
