E-scooter Seized in Cobh as Gardaí Remind Public of the Rules
Gardaí seize e-scooter in Cobh and remind the public of the rules of the road for e-scooter users.
An e-scooter has been seized in Cobh after Gardaí carried out enforcement action in the town.
An Garda Síochána confirmed the e-scooter was seized at the Five Footway, Cobh by community engagement Gardaí. The post noted that riding on footpaths and use by those under 16 years of age are among the laws governing e-scooter use.
Gardaí took the opportunity to remind the public that the rules on e-scooters are clear. Under current legislation, e-scooters are restricted to a maximum weight unladen of 25 kilograms, a maximum design speed of 20 kilometres per hour, and a maximum power of 400W.
E-scooters must be fitted with front and rear lights, a bell or horn, and front and rear brakes. They are not permitted on footpaths or motorways, cannot be used to carry passengers or goods, and must not have a seat fitted.
Users must be over 16 years old and cannot use the scooter while intoxicated. Failure to adhere to Road Traffic legislation may incur a fine or a court summons.
Although personal protection equipment is not compulsory, it is strongly recommended.
