E-Bike Response Units to Enhance Emergency Care in Cork

Cork has become the first city in Ireland to deploy an e-bike rapid response medical unit, a significant development for emergency medical services in urban environments. This new initiative, led by St John Ambulance Cork, was introduced during the Cork City Marathon, providing medical support to runners and spectators.

How the unit works

The e-bike response unit consists of two electrically assisted pedal bicycles. Each bike is designed to carry up to 25 kilograms of essential medical equipment, including defibrillators, oxygen, and other life-support tools. The introduction of the e-bike unit is especially valuable as Cork hosts a busy calendar of public events, including stadium games, music concerts at venues like Virgin Media Park, and city festivals such as Live at the Marquee. The e-bike response unit was made possible through a partnership between Cork City Council and HSE South West, with additional support from local councillors and sponsors Roca Sports, Eco-Bike, and Clearsphere.
