Dublin Airport Terminal 2 has reopened for normal operations this afternoon following a precautionary evacuation due to suspicious luggage, with the item subsequently declared safe by Defence Forces specialists.

An Garda Síochána responded to reports of concerning airline luggage at Dublin Airport earlier this afternoon, prompting the evacuation of Terminal 2 and restrictions on traffic entering the airport as a safety precaution.

The Gardaí requested assistance from the Defence Forces' Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Team to examine the suspicious item. Following an initial assessment at the scene, the luggage was safely contained and relocated to an alternative location that would not disrupt airport operations.

Airport authorities confirmed that Dublin Airport and its associated access routes have now reopened for normal operations. The Defence Forces' EOD specialists conducted a thorough examination of the luggage at the secure location and have declared it safe.

An Garda Síochána spokesperson said:

"Based on the information available to An Garda Síochána and other relevant stakeholders, this was an appropriate and responsible approach to the situation which was presented."

The security alert caused temporary disruption to one of Ireland's busiest transport hubs, which serves thousands of passengers daily including many travelling to and from Cork.

The swift response from emergency services and the Defence Forces ensured the situation was resolved efficiently, minimising disruption to travellers. Terminal 2 handles numerous international flights, making the rapid resolution crucial for maintaining normal airport operations.
