Dromcummer and Cullen Communities Benefit from Major Water Network Upgrade

Dromcummer and Cullen get major water network boost: 5.1km of old pipes replaced to cut leaks and improve supply reliability along N72.

Dromcummer and Cullen Communities Benefit from Major Water Network Upgrade

Over 5.1 kilometres of aging water mains along the N72 have been successfully replaced, bringing more reliable water supply to the Dromcummer and Cullen communities in North Cork. The extensive upgrade, completed as part of Uisce Éireann's national Leakage Reduction Programme, addresses longstanding issues with bursts and water loss that have plagued the area.

The replacement of the old pipework represents a significant infrastructure investment for these rural communities, where water reliability has been a persistent concern. The upgraded network will substantially reduce the frequency of burst pipes and unexpected outages that have disrupted homes and businesses in recent years.

Jack Cronin, Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann:

"The importance of these works cannot be understated and form part of a significant investment by Uisce Éireann to upgrade infrastructure and provide an improved water supply to enable local communities to thrive for years to come. The replacement of these old, damaged pipes will significantly lower the instances of bursts, outages and leakage on the network ensuring a stronger and more resilient supply for the area. We would like to thank the local community for their cooperation and patience as we carried out these essential works."

The project, delivered by contractor Ward and Burke on behalf of Uisce Éireann, forms part of a broader national effort to modernise Ireland's water infrastructure. With the main pipeline work now complete, attention turns to the final phase of permanent road surface reinstatement, which Uisce Éireann will coordinate with Cork County Council in the coming weeks.

This upgrade contributes to Uisce Éireann's ambitious target of reducing the national water leakage rate to 25% by 2030. Since 2018, when leakage stood at 46%, the national Leakage Reduction team has made substantial progress in conserving this precious resource.

Residents who spot leaks in the public water network can report them to Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 or through their online reporting system. The utility has also introduced a free text alert service, allowing customers to receive real-time updates about local water issues by registering with their Eircode and mobile number.

The completion of this project marks another step forward in securing North Cork's water future, ensuring these communities have the reliable infrastructure needed to support homes, farms, and businesses for years to come.
