Detective Bláithín Is On the Case: Cork's Playful Culture Trail Returns for 2026
Cork's Playful Culture Trail launches today for its sixth summer, with Detective Bláithín leading families on a free adventure across 20+ city locations.
Cork's much-loved Playful Culture Trail is back for another summer of family fun, launching today on the UN International Day of Play and inviting young detectives to uncover clues, solve mysteries and explore the city's rich cultural and heritage attractions.
Now in its sixth year, the free, self-guided trail transforms Cork City into a giant cultural adventure that can be enjoyed in a single day, over a weekend or across the whole summer. Families can pick up a child-friendly trail map from participating attractions or the Cork Tourist Information Office before setting off to collect stamps and complete challenges at more than 20 locations across the city.
Leading the way this year is Detective Bláithín, the trail's beloved green lizard mascot. Having previously appeared as a pirate and a sustainable artist, Bláithín takes on the role of detective in 2026, encouraging children to look closer, ask questions and discover the stories behind Cork's most iconic places.
The activities are designed to fire young imaginations. Families can search for hidden cannon balls at Elizabeth Fort, hunt for planets at Blackrock Castle Observatory, print their own butter wrapper at The Butter Museum, discover historic prisoner graffiti at Cork City Gaol and seek out Michael Collins' diary at Cork Military Museum. There's also the mystery of the famous Cork Horns to uncover at Cork Public Museum, a labyrinth to find at St Fin Barre's Cathedral, Ogham stones to decode at UCC, dressing up at Nano Nagle Place and even a fairy house to build for Bláithín in Fitzgerald Park.
Beyond the headline activities, the trail also suggests exploring Marina Park, crossing the city's famous shaky bridge, borrowing a board game from Cork City Library, following The Glucksman's art trail and completing puzzles at Old Cork Waterworks Experience.
Cllr. Fergal Dennehy, Lord Mayor of Cork:
"The Playful Culture Trail continues to showcase the very best of Cork City's cultural attractions, inviting families to explore heritage, creativity, and place through play. Bláithín, our much-loved mascot, leads the way by sparking curiosity and encouraging young people to discover the stories behind each location. In its sixth year, the trail highlights how play can connect children and families with culture in fun, meaningful ways."
Martin O'Donoghue, Play Strategist with Let's Play Cork:
"Since launching the Playful Culture Trail in 2021, thousands of children have enjoyed exploring Cork's museums, galleries, heritage sites and outdoor spaces through play, creativity and curiosity. The trail is about making culture more accessible and enjoyable for young people while encouraging them to be active, ask questions and see their city in new ways. Over the past five years, children have followed Bláithín's adventures across the city in many different roles, and we're delighted to welcome her back as Detective Bláithín for another summer of discovery and adventure as part of Cork's ambition to be a more playful and child-friendly city."
