Dead Swans and Duck Removed from Cork's Lough as Bird Flu Testing Ordered
Dead swans and duck removed from the Lough in Cork over the weekend. Remains sent for bird flu testing. Avoid contact with sick or dead birds.
Cork City Council has removed two dead swans and a dead duck from the Lough amenity over the weekend, with the remains now being sent for bird flu testing. Results are expected to take at least 10 days, whilst existing biosecurity measures remain in place.
The remains of the three birds discovered at the weekend have been arranged for transport to a Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine laboratory, where they will be tested to confirm the presence or otherwise of avian influenza.
Cork City Council has advised that formal confirmation of the test results will take at least 10 days to be received.
In the meantime, the biosecurity measures introduced at the Lough in September following the first confirmed case of bird flu there remain fully in place.
People visiting the Lough are still being advised to avoid contact with sick or dead wild birds. A temporary ban on fishing at the amenity remains in effect, and the bird feeder continues to be out of action.
Cork City Council thanked people for their continued cooperation during the ongoing bird flu outbreak. The last confirmed positive test for bird flu at the Lough was recorded on 21 September.
