Cork's Lord Mayor Pays Tribute to Sr Stan, Founder of Focus Ireland
Cork's Lord Mayor pays tribute to Sr Stan, founder of Focus Ireland, who died aged 86. Book of condolences open at City Hall until 14 November.
The Lord Mayor of Cork has led tributes to Sister Stanislaus Kennedy following her death at the age of 86, describing her as one of Ireland's most compassionate and visionary voices for social justice.
Sr Stan, who died on Monday morning at St Francis Hospice in Blanchardstown, dedicated her life to tackling homelessness, poverty and inequality across Ireland.
Cllr Fergal Dennehy, Lord Mayor of Cork, said:
"Sr Stan was a pioneering force in social justice who dedicated her life to the service of the homeless, the marginalised, and the forgotten. Her work was rooted in empathy and action."
Born Treasa Kennedy in Lispole on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry in 1939, Sr Stan joined the Religious Sisters of Charity at the age of 18. Her groundbreaking research into homelessness among women in Dublin during the 1980s revealed a hidden crisis that had been largely ignored by society.
In 1985, she founded Focus Point, now known as Focus Ireland, which has since become the country's largest voluntary organisation supporting people experiencing homelessness. The charity continues to provide dignity and hope to thousands of people across Ireland.
Cllr Dennehy continued:
"Her legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of Irish society. Her groundbreaking research into homelessness among women revealed truths that had long been ignored, and she responded not with outrage alone, but with solutions."
Sr Stan's commitment to social justice extended far beyond homelessness. In 2001, she established the Immigrant Council of Ireland, recognising the challenges faced by newcomers to the country. She also founded The Sanctuary meditation centre in 1998, demonstrating her belief in holistic care that addressed physical, emotional and spiritual needs.
Cllr Dennehy said:
"She lived among those she served, listened deeply, and built structures of support that endure to this day. Throughout her life, Sr Stan challenged institutions and governments to do better. She was never afraid to speak truth to power."
The Lord Mayor praised her unwavering conviction and boundless compassion, adding: "Her voice was steady, her convictions unwavering, and her compassion boundless. She leaves behind a legacy of courage, kindness, and transformative change."
A book of condolences has been opened for members of the public who wish to pay their respects to Sr Stan. The book is available in the atrium of Cork City Hall Civic Offices on Anglesea Street between 10am and 4pm, Monday to Friday, until 14 November.
