Cork Young People Join National Youth Senate at Leinster House
Cork's young voices help shape Ireland's EU agenda at historic youth senate in Leinster House.
Five young delegates from County Cork were among 60 young people from across Ireland who took their seats in the Seanad chamber earlier this month to discuss the country's priorities ahead of its EU Presidency in 2026.
Krish, Josh, Sophie, Harry and Delilah represented Cork at Seanad na nÓg 2025, the second youth senate event held at Leinster House on Friday 14 November. The gathering brought together delegates under the age of 18 from Comhairle na nÓg councils and other youth organisations nationwide.
The event was co-chaired by Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann Senator Mark Daly, Leas-Chathaoirleach Senator Maria Byrne, and Christian from Kerry Comhairle na nÓg.
Senator Mark Daly, Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann:
"The Seanad continues to empower the voice of young people. The Seanad has championed minority voices since its foundation. Today, we will absorb their wisdom, reflect on their insights and act on their recommendations."
Young delegates debated seven key priorities they believe the Government should consider for Ireland's EU Presidency, which begins in June 2026. These included peace and security in a digital world, climate action, education and mental health supports, the cost of living, substance misuse prevention, improvements to the care system, and equality.
Christian, Co-Chair of Seanad na nÓg:
"It gives young people under 18 a voice in our democracy, even though we can't yet vote. It's great that young people can give their input on the important EU Presidency Ireland will hold next year, as we'll inherit whatever EU this generation's leaders leave to us."
Minister for Children, Disability and Equality Norma Foley:
"Congratulations to all the students who have travelled from all across the country to be part of this very important gathering, sharing thoughts and ideas with the Government in advance of the Irish EU presidency."
Recommendations from the day-long event will be presented to Government for consideration in Ireland's EU Presidency priorities.
