Cork Women's Mini Marathon This Sunday Brings Road Closures and Transport Changes
Road closures from midday, Gardaí advising the public to use public transport.
Cork city centre will see significant road closures this Sunday as thousands of participants take on the annual Women's Mini Marathon, with An Garda Síochána advising motorists to plan alternative routes and use public transport where possible.
The 6km event kicks off at 1pm on Sunday, 21st September, starting from Centre Park Road and winding through some of Cork's most scenic routes along the Marina Promenade, Blackrock Road, and Park Avenue before finishing on Monahan Road beside Kennedy Park.
Registration opens at 10am at the Marina Market on Kennedy Quay, giving participants three hours to collect their numbers before the starting gun. With limited parking around the event area, gardaí are encouraging the use of public or shared transport to ease congestion.
Road closures will roll out in phases from midday, starting with Marina Walk and Mill Road from 12pm until 1:30pm. Centre Park Road follows suit from 12pm to 1:40pm, whilst the busy Blackrock Road stretch from Castle Road to Churchyard Lane will be closed from 12:45pm until 2:30pm. Monahan Road faces the longest closure, sealed off from 12:45pm until 3pm.
The good news for residents and businesses is that roads will reopen progressively as runners pass through each section, minimising the disruption to Cork's Sunday afternoon traffic flow.
Parking will be available in city centre car parks, but gardaí have issued stern warnings against blocking housing estate entrances, business premises, footpaths, disabled spaces, or bus stops. They've also reminded drivers not to park anywhere that might restrict emergency vehicle access.
Bus Éireann passengers should note that routes 202 (Hollyhill to Mahon Point) and 212 (Kent Station to Mahon Point) will be diverted via Boreenmanna Road from midday until 3pm. Taxi users can be dropped off on Victoria Road, just before Marina Walk.
The event represents one of Cork's largest annual sporting gatherings, drawing participants from across Munster and beyond to tackle the scenic harbour-side route that showcases some of the city's finest maritime views.
