Cork to Witness Rare Solar Eclipse at Blackrock Castle Observatory

Blackrock Castle Observatory is set to host a special public viewing of a rare partial solar eclipse on 29 March 2025, offering a unique opportunity for astronomy enthusiasts and the general public to safely witness the celestial event.

The event, taking place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., will allow visitors to experience the eclipse as the Moon partially obscures the Sun, reaching a peak coverage of 42% at 10:55 a.m. Experts from the observatory will be on hand to answer questions and provide insights into the phenomenon.

Niall Smith, Head of Research at Munster Technological University and Blackrock Castle Observatory, described the occasion as a must-see event:

"Even partial eclipses are truly remarkable to witness, and we’re thrilled to host a safe and friendly environment for people of all ages to experience this awe-inspiring event."

To ensure safety, Blackrock Castle Observatory will provide solar-viewing glasses, specially adapted telescopes, and guidance from experts. Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn how to use a pinhole viewer, a simple but effective method for safely observing the eclipse.

Other March Astronomical Highlights

  • Total Lunar Eclipse – 14 March
Early risers may catch a glimpse of the Moon turning blood red as Earth's shadow covers it, starting from 5:20 a.m. However, the Moon will be low on the horizon, making visibility a challenge in Ireland.
  • Spring Equinox – 20 March
Marking the transition into spring, the equinox will bring nearly equal hours of daylight and darkness, leading to longer days and higher midday Sun.
