Cork is preparing for one of its biggest cultural celebrations of the year as Munster Technological University announces its role as host venue for the Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan 2025. The four-day festival will bring more than 3,000 competitors and 15,000 visitors to the city from 16th to 19th July.
The competitions will take place at MTU's Bishopstown Campus, utilising the university's state-of-the-art facilities including the 1,200-seat MTU Arena, the Rory Gallagher Theatre, and the recently refurbished Carmine Building. The wider Fleadh programme will be formally launched at Cork City Hall on Friday evening, 11th July.
This marks MTU's third time hosting the Munster Fleadh, having previously welcomed the event in 2017 at the Cork School of Music and again in 2023 at the Kerry North Campus. The university's involvement reflects its commitment to supporting Irish traditional music and culture across its six campuses.
Professor Maggie Cusack, MTU President, said:
"With just one week to go, we are really looking forward to welcoming the Fleadh Cheoil performers, their families, loved ones, friends, and the wider public to our campuses. MTU is proud to play host to this vibrant celebration of Irish arts, music and culture."
The festival will feature competitions across music, singing, dancing, scéalaíocht and comhrá Gaeilge, supported by 300 volunteers and 80 adjudicators, tutors, and officials. Beyond the competitions, attendees can enjoy a Fleadh Session Trail in city pubs, a gig-rig at Elizabeth Fort, workshops, and street entertainment competitions.
Professor Alistair Payne, Dean of Faculty of Creative and Performing Arts and Media, commented:
"MTU has a long tradition and heritage as a centre of excellence for the creative and performing arts, particularly through MTU Cork School of Music, which for generations has fostered a unique learning environment for musicianship."
Concert highlights include performances by globally-renowned traditional music groups Téada on Friday 11th July at 8pm, and the Mairtín Ó Connor Trio on Thursday 17th July at 8pm, both taking place at the MTU Cork School of Music Curtis Theatre.
The event is sponsored by MTU, Cork City Council and Cork Airport, with the Irish Examiner as media partner. Full programme details are available at www.munsterfleadh.ie, with concert tickets available through www.eventbrite.ie.
Cork's summer cultural calendar continues to strengthen with this significant addition, promising an unforgettable celebration of Irish heritage and community spirit across the city.
