Cork Primary Schools' Sports to Bring Heavy Traffic Around MTU This Thursday
Over 6,000 children at MTU Thursday for the Cork Primary Schools' Sports. Free park and ride from Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium; heavy traffic expected.
Motorists are being advised to expect heavy traffic and delays around MTU this Thursday, 28 May 2026, as over 6,000 children from 300 Cork primary schools gather for the Cork Primary Schools' Sports.
The event will run from 9:30am until 5pm. Organisers say heavy traffic is expected on all approach routes from early morning, with delays at the Bandon Road Roundabout.
A comprehensive traffic management plan has been put in place in conjunction with An Garda SĂochĂĄna and MTU officials. Drivers travelling to the event are being asked to approach MTU via the N40/N22, taking Junction 1 for the N22 to Cork West, Ballincollig and Blarney, then driving north on the dual carriageway and continuing through the Poulavone Roundabout onto Model Farm Road (R608). A one-way traffic system will be in operation around the campus.
On-campus parking is limited. A free park and ride service will operate throughout the day from Curraheen Park Greyhound Stadium, with organisers asking attendees to allow sufficient time for the bus transfer.
Drivers are being asked to avoid the area if possible. Those attending are urged to cooperate with GardaĂ and stewards on the day, and to park only in designated areas.
Buses bringing pupils to the event will follow a separate route and will set down at MTU before parking at the Cork Showgrounds. Bus parking is not available on the MTU campus.
The full traffic management plan is available on the LĂșthchleasa Bhunscoileanna ChorcaĂ website.
