  • Cork County Council has unveiled an exciting new initiative that transforms local libraries into gateways to nature, offering specialised wildlife exploration kits that promise to turn curious Corkonians into citizen scientists.

The innovative scheme provides four distinct mini-kits focused on bats, birds, bugs, and plants, each equipped with professional-grade tools and educational resources. From bat detectors to binoculars, field guides to educational DVDs, these comprehensive kits offer everything needed to explore County Cork's rich biodiversity.

Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr Mary Linehan Foley, welcomed the initiative:

"By helping to empower local communities with the tools and knowledge to engage with nature, we can all play a vital role in understanding, restoring and safeguarding Cork's remarkable biodiversity for generations to come."

The timing couldn't be better for families looking to make the most of the late summer weather, with each kit providing an opportunity to discover the wildlife that thrives in Cork's diverse landscapes, from coastal habitats to ancient woodlands.

Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Moira Murrell, highlighted the broader environmental goals:

"This initiative underscores Cork County Council's ongoing commitment to sustainability, evident in the objectives of its current Climate Action Plan 2024-2029, and to supporting the invaluable contributions communities make in celebrating and protecting our natural environment."

The kits represent a creative use of library resources, transforming these community hubs into centres for environmental education. Whether you're hoping to identify the nocturnal squeaks in your garden with a bat detector or keen to put names to the birds visiting your feeder, there's a kit tailored to your interests.

Given the expected high demand and limited initial availability, interested borrowers must email sustainablelibrary@corkcoco.ie to request a kit. Once notified that your chosen kit is ready, you can collect it from your designated branch library.

The initiative cleverly positions Cork's libraries as more than just repositories of books; they're now launching pads for outdoor adventures, proving that the best stories might just be the ones waiting to be discovered in your own back garden or local park.

Whether you're a parent hoping to prise the young ones away from screens or simply someone who's always wondered about that peculiar bird call at dawn, these wildlife kits offer the perfect excuse to embrace your inner David Attenborough, Cork style.
