Cork County Council Urges Extreme Caution as Icy Conditions Expected This Weekend

Cork County Council is urging road users to take extreme care as a Met Éireann Status Yellow Low Temperature/Ice warning takes effect across the county this weekend.

The warning will be in place for two consecutive nights: from 18:00 on Saturday, 3 January until 11:00 on Sunday, 4 January, and again from 18:00 on Sunday, 4 January until 11:00 on Monday, 5 January.

Temperatures are expected to fall to between -2 and -4 degrees in many areas, bringing sharp or severe frost and icy stretches across the county.

Cork County Council's Severe Weather Assessment Team is monitoring the situation and will treat priority routes. However, due to the low temperatures, widespread icy patches can be expected even on treated roads.

Potential impacts include dangerous travelling conditions on roads and footpaths, travel disruption and delays, and animal welfare concerns.

Those who must travel are advised to slow down, drive with caution, allow extra time for journeys, and remain aware of other road users. Even treated roads may still present hazardous conditions.

Residents are encouraged to keep mobile phones fully charged, monitor Met Éireann forecasts at met.ie, and consult the Be Winter Ready website for further advice on preparing for severe weather.

Cork County Council's out of hours number, 021 4800048, is available to report any issues. Updates on treated routes and council services will be posted on corkcoco.ie and the council's social media channels.

In an emergency, dial 999 or 112.
