Cork County Council Launches Survey to Unlock Residential Potential Above and Behind Shops
Cork County Council is surveying commercial property owners on converting unused spaces above and behind shops into homes. Survey open until 30 April.
Cork County Council has launched a new survey targeting owners of commercial properties in town and village centres across County Cork, seeking to identify opportunities to convert underused spaces into much-needed homes.
The survey aims to gather insights from property owners on the feasibility, challenges, and opportunities for converting spaces above or behind shops and other commercial premises into residential accommodation. The findings will inform future council strategies and help maximise the impact of government support schemes.
Recent government announcements indicate expanded financial supports in 2026 from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage, specifically aimed at bringing underutilised space above or behind existing commercial premises into residential use.
Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Mary Linehan Foley said:
"This survey is a key step in identifying ways to bring new life to our towns and villages. By working together, we can transform unused spaces into vibrant homes, support local communities, and increase housing supply in County Cork. We strongly encourage property owners to take part in the survey."
Chief Executive of Cork County Council, Moira Murrell added:
"Cork County Council is committed to making the most of available government supports and working closely with property owners to ensure the success of residential conversions. Revitalising underused buildings in our town and village centres is crucial. Not only does it provide much-needed homes, but it also breathes new life into our communities, preserves local heritage, and helps to strengthen the social and economic fabric of our county."
Property owners can complete the survey online at www.corkcoco.ie, or request a paper copy by contacting Cork County Council's Town Regeneration Office at townregenerationoffice@corkcoco.ie or by calling 021 4285317 / 021 4285397. The survey runs from 23rd March to 30th April 2026.
