Cork County Council Issues Updated Advice as Freezing Conditions Continue

Cork County Council has issued an updated advisory as the Status Yellow Low Temperature and Ice warning remains in effect until 09:00 tomorrow, Tuesday 6th January.

Temperatures across the county are expected to drop to between -1 and -3 degrees Celsius overnight, with persistent low temperatures over recent days creating hazardous travelling conditions.

The combination of rainfall, sleet and snow has left many surfaces dangerous, with sharp or severe frost, icy stretches and black ice presenting significant risks to road users and pedestrians alike.

Cork County Council's Severe Weather Assessment Team continues to monitor conditions closely. Priority routes will receive treatment, though the council emphasises that even treated roadways may develop icy patches.

Advice for Motorists

Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution on all journeys. The council warns of a high probability of icy stretches and black ice throughout Cork County, including on roads that have been gritted.

Pedestrian and Cyclist Safety

Footpaths and other untreated surfaces could prove treacherous. Pedestrians and cyclists should take extra care when venturing outdoors, particularly during early morning and evening hours.

Emergency Preparedness

The public is advised to ensure mobile phones are fully charged before travelling and to bring them on all journeys. In an emergency, dial 999 or 112.
