Cork City Quays Hit by Tidal Flooding, Multiple Road Closures in Effect

Cork City Council has closed several quayside roads this evening due to flooding caused by high spring tides, with motorists urged to exercise caution when travelling through low-lying areas of the city centre.

The flooding, which began affecting the quays earlier this evening, has forced the closure of Wandesford Quay and Union Quay to all traffic, whilst one eastbound lane on Lavitts Quay has also been shut.

Cork City Council issued the alert at 5:02 PM on Wednesday, 5 November 2025, advising road users to proceed with caution in affected areas. The closures are in place as a precautionary measure whilst high spring tides continue to affect the city's low-lying quayside routes.

Spring tides, which occur during new and full moons, bring higher than average water levels and can cause flooding along Cork's quays when combined with other weather conditions. The city's riverside roads are particularly vulnerable to tidal flooding due to their proximity to the River Lee.

Motorists are advised to avoid the affected routes and seek alternative pathways through the city centre. The road closures are expected to remain in place until water levels recede.

Cork City Council has not indicated when the roads will reopen, with conditions dependent on tidal patterns. Drivers should expect delays and plan journeys accordingly.
