Cork City Hall Goes Dark for Earth Hour

Cork City Hall fell silent and dim on Saturday evening as local councillors joined communities around the world in marking Earth Hour, the global initiative calling for collective action on climate change.

Councillor Honore Kamegni led the symbolic switch-off at City Hall, describing the moment as "a small switch-off with a very big and powerful message: that every action counts."

"Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time," he said. "We must stand together as a city and as a global community to protect our environment and build a sustainable future."

Cllr. Kamegni was joined on the night by fellow councillor Cllr. Oliver Moran and members of the Cork Greens, as the building's non-essential lights were turned off for one hour in solidarity with the worldwide event.

Earth Hour, organised annually by the World Wide Fund for Nature, encourages individuals, communities, and institutions to switch off non-essential lighting for one hour as a reminder of the shared responsibility to address environmental challenges.

Cllr. Kamegni also took the opportunity to acknowledge the broader effort behind the event.

"I want to thank Cork City Council for their continued commitment to climate action and for standing in solidarity with communities across the world, and to thank the staff on the night for organising the switching off of the lights," he added.
