Cork City Council Launches Tenth Affordable Housing Scheme with Nine Homes in Killeen's

Cork City Council has unveiled its latest affordable housing development at Carraig Dún, Killeen's, offering nine semi-detached homes from €320,000 to eligible buyers, marking a significant milestone as the authority's tenth such scheme.

The new development, delivered in partnership with Galtymore Homes, brings the total number of properties offered under Cork City Council's Affordable Housing Scheme to 403 homes. Located less than six kilometres from Cork City Centre, the A2 energy-rated homes represent a circa 20% discount on open market values.

The Carraig Dún development sits in an enviable position for Cork residents, with easy access to popular retail areas in Blarney, Blackpool, and Ballyvolane. Nature enthusiasts will appreciate the proximity to the walking trail at Clogheenmilcon Fen, whilst commuters benefit from connections to the North Ring Road, N20 Dual Carriageway, and the proposed new North Ring Motorway route just two kilometres away.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Fergal Dennehy, said:

"As the tenth scheme launched under our Affordable Housing initiative, this project is a clear demonstration of the Council's ongoing commitment to delivering high-quality, affordable homes for the people of Cork. Cork City Council has exceeded its housing targets for the 2022–2024 period, and it is developments like this that are helping to keep us firmly on that upward trajectory."

The announcement comes as the third affordable housing scheme launched by the council in recent months, reflecting the authority's accelerated delivery programme. Previous developments have been established across Boherboy Road, Tower, Montenotte, Bishopstown, Ballincollig, Whites Cross, Grange, Lehenaghamore, and most recently at Glenbride on the Old Mallow Road.

Brian Geaney, Deputy Chief Executive at Cork City Council, added:

This is the third Affordable Housing Scheme launched by Cork City Council in recent months, and Carraig Dún is another significant milestone in Cork City Council's expanding Affordable Housing portfolio, bringing the total number of homes offered under the Scheme to over 400 houses."

The three-bedroom, architect-designed homes are primarily available to first-time buyers without existing property interests, though exceptions may apply for 'Fresh Start' applicants. Under the scheme's terms, purchasers enter an 'Affordable Dwelling Purchase Agreement' with the local authority, which retains a percentage equity share equal to the discount provided.

Given the popularity of previous Cork City Council affordable housing schemes, significant interest is anticipated for the Carraig Dún development. Income limits apply to potential applicants, who are strongly advised to familiarise themselves with qualification criteria and required documentation before applying.

Applications will be accepted through an online portal at www.carraigdun.ie from 12 noon on Wednesday, 6th August 2025, until midnight on Wednesday, 27th August 2025. Prospective buyers requiring additional information can contact affordablehousing@corkcity.ie.
