Cork City Council Completes 5.3km of Cycling Infrastructure in Mahon Street Renewal Scheme

Cork City Council has installed approximately 5.3 kilometres of safer cycling infrastructure this year as part of the Mahon Street Renewal Scheme, marking Cork's first community-wide streetscape renewal programme aimed at transforming the Mahon area into a safer, more connected neighbourhood.

The ambitious scheme has introduced segregated cycle tracks and greenways alongside extensive improvements to footpaths, pedestrian crossings, and public spaces, creating multi-modal links to schools, retail outlets, and leisure facilities throughout Mahon.

The renewal programme has delivered two new pedestrian crossings with upgrades to existing crossings, three new signalised junctions, and enhanced public open spaces featuring seating and extensive landscaping. More than 200 specially selected semi-mature street trees have been planted throughout the area, contributing to both the aesthetic appeal and environmental benefits of the scheme.

Traffic calming measures have been integrated throughout the renewal area, with new road markings and signage designed to reduce traffic speeds and create a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike. The comprehensive approach includes new bus and cycle infrastructure, ensuring the area caters to all forms of transport.

The Mahon Street Renewal Scheme represents a significant investment in sustainable transport infrastructure for Cork, prioritising active travel and community connectivity whilst improving safety for all road users in one of the city's key residential and commercial areas.
