Cork City Council has adopted a new Frugal Energy Efficient Living Policy designed to optimise resource use across housing, mobility, urban planning, and enhance the circular economy in the city.

The policy centres on the concept of frugality, defined as being economical with resources. In the housing sector, citizens will be empowered through education and training to reduce household energy demand using low-tech solutions.

The approach extends across multiple areas of city life, aiming to help Cork become more resource-efficient without compromising quality of life or economic ambition.

Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Fergal Dennehy said:

"The adoption of the Frugal Energy Efficient Living policy is a step in the right direction and shows our ambition as a Mission City. Frugality is the missing piece in terms of the drive toward a Climate Neutral and Smart City. It is about a city that consumes what it needs to survive and thrive without limiting our wealth, ambition, or quality of life."

The initiative forms part of the Frugal Cities project, an Interreg Europe programme funded through the European Regional Development Fund.

The policy represents Cork's continued commitment to sustainability and climate action as the city works towards its Mission City goals.
