Cork Airport Partnership Launches Free Higher Education Skills Programme
Free higher education skills programme launches in Cork through MTU and Cork Airport partnership.

Munster Technological University has partnered with Cork Airport to offer a groundbreaking free certificate programme designed to help adult learners and underrepresented groups access higher education, with the first cohort beginning this month.
The "Starting Strong: Essential Skills for Higher Education" initiative represents a significant investment in Cork's educational landscape, removing financial barriers that often prevent adults from pursuing academic advancement. Supported entirely by Cork Airport's Community Fund, the 12-week programme will provide participants with a Level 6 Single Subject Certificate worth 5 ECTS credits.
The comprehensive course covers essential academic foundations including critical thinking, academic writing, digital literacy, and navigating higher education systems. Participants will develop practical skills such as using library databases, evaluating information sources, and creating professional CVs and cover letters.
MTU's Access Service has designed the programme using a trauma-sensitive approach, recognising that many adult learners may have had challenging previous educational experiences. The initiative will be delivered by MTU postgraduate students and academic staff from the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences.
Laura Coleman, Access Officer at MTU, said:
"This certificate is primarily about expanding access and creating opportunities for learners who may not have traditionally seen themselves in higher education. With the generous support of the Cork Airport Community Fund, we are proud to offer a practical, inclusive and accessible option to support learners to grow in confidence and unlock new educational possibilities."
The partnership reflects Cork Airport's broader commitment to community investment through its Community Fund, which has supported numerous local initiatives across arts, culture, education and sports this year.
Niall MacCarthy, Managing Director of Cork Airport, commented:
"Cork Airport is committed to investing in the communities we serve through our Community Fund. We are delighted to support MTU's Starting Strong certificate, which will provide essential educational opportunities for individuals eager to grow and succeed. This is one of a number of important initiatives in the arts, culture, community and education space, supported by Cork Airport this year and we commend MTU for delivering this initiative."
The timing of this announcement coincides with increasing recognition of the need for flexible educational pathways that accommodate adult learners' diverse circumstances. Traditional university entry routes often fail to serve those who left formal education early or faced educational disadvantages.
By providing not just free tuition but also educational supplies, the programme eliminates common barriers that prevent participation. The 12-week timeframe offers a manageable commitment while still delivering substantial academic preparation.
This collaboration exemplifies how local partnerships can create meaningful educational opportunities, particularly for communities that have historically faced barriers to higher education access. The programme's success could serve as a model for similar initiatives across Ireland.
Cork Airport Community Fund's support extends beyond education, with partnerships including the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival, Fleadh Cheoil na Mumhan, and various local sports clubs, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to community development.
