Cobh Marks 111 Years Since Lusitania Mass Funeral with Annual Commemoration
Cobh commemorates 111 years since the Lusitania mass funeral this Sunday, 10 May, with ceremonies at Casement Square at 2.30pm and the Old Church Cemetery at 3.30pm.
Cobh will once again host a solemn tribute to the victims of one of maritime history's most devastating disasters this May, as the town marks 111 years since the mass funeral of those lost in the sinking of the RMS Lusitania.
The annual Lusitania Commemoration Ceremony, organised by Cobh Tourism, takes place on Sunday, 10 May, honouring the 1,201 lives lost when the ocean liner was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20 on 7 May 1915, just 11 miles south of the Old Head of Kinsale. The ship sank in just 18 minutes.
In the days that followed, Cobh, then known as Queenstown, became the centre of rescue, recovery, and remembrance as survivors and recovered victims were brought ashore. The town's response to the disaster left a lasting mark on its identity, one that is renewed each year through this commemoration.
The public ceremony will begin at 2.30pm at the Lusitania Peace Memorial in Casement Square, where a Colour Party from the O.N.E. will assemble alongside representatives of the Royal Naval Association and other maritime and historical groups. The proceedings will include prayers, musical honours by the Commodore Male Voice Choir, the laying of wreaths, and the sounding of the Last Post.
At 3.30pm, the ceremony will continue at the Old Church Cemetery, where victims were buried in mass graves and individual plots on 10 May 1915, exactly 111 years before this year's event. Glass Memorial headstones now mark those graves as a quiet and permanent tribute to the lives lost.
