Coast Guard Rescues Kite Surfers in Difficulty off Fort Carlisle
Crosshaven Coast Guard successfully rescued two kite surfers who got into trouble in challenging conditions off Fort Carlisle this afternoon, after alert members of the public raised the alarm.

The rescue unfolded whilst Coast Guard volunteers were attending a local fundraiser organised by Crosshaven Fire & Rescue. A member of the public contacted Valentia Coast Guard after spotting two kite surfers who appeared to be struggling in the waters near Fort Carlisle.

With a small craft warning already in place, indicating hazardous conditions for smaller vessels, the Coast Guard team immediately responded to the call and proceeded with caution to reach the kite surfers.
Upon reaching the scene, the rescue team established communications with both individuals. One kite surfer was taken aboard the Coast Guard vessel due to safety concerns and possible exhaustion. The second kite surfer was escorted safely ashore to Loughbeg beach.
The Coast Guard praised the vigilance of the members of the public who recognised the kite surfers were potentially in difficulty and made the crucial 999/112 call early. Their quick thinking likely prevented a more serious incident from developing, particularly given the challenging sea conditions.
The rescue serves as a reminder that water sports enthusiasts should check weather warnings and sea conditions before heading out, particularly when small craft warnings are in effect. The combination of strong winds that attract kite surfers can also create dangerous sea states that can quickly overwhelm even experienced participants.
Both kite surfers were safely brought ashore, and the Coast Guard team was able to return to their fundraising activities with their fire service colleagues, having demonstrated the importance of their voluntary service to the Crosshaven community.
