CCPC Takes Action Against Eight Retailers Over Consumer Protection Breaches
CCPC takes enforcement action against 8 retailers including Rathwood, Easons, Very and Mr Price over consumer protection and pricing breaches.
Ireland's competition and consumer watchdog has published details of enforcement action taken against eight retailers, including legally binding commitments, fixed payment notices, and compliance notices arising from inspections and investigations across the country.
The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) confirmed the measures on 10 April 2026, covering undertakings signed by three retailers and fixed payment notices and compliance notices issued to five others.
Undertakings
Three retailers signed legally binding commitments to comply with consumer protection law. Rathwood (Rath-Wood Home and Garden World Ltd) committed to refunding certain consumers. Easons.com (Ofwal Ltd) and Very (Shop Direct Ireland Ltd) both signed undertakings to comply with sales pricing legislation, following CCPC investigations into the use of price reduction announcements on their respective websites during the 2023/24 winter sales period.
Fixed Payment Notices
SuperValu at Aston Quay, Dublin 2 (Cedarglade Ltd) was issued two fixed payment notices for failing to display correct prices. Mr Price (Corajio Unlimited Company) received six fixed payment notices for failing to display unit prices at its stores in Midleton, Co. Cork and Killarney, Co. Kerry. Applegreen in Athlone, Co. Westmeath (Petrogas Group Ltd) was issued one fixed payment notice for failing to display the price of a product in its forecourt shop. Each fixed payment notice carries a set fine of €300.
Compliance Notices
Munster Tech Centre (Phoenix Mobile and Communications Ltd) received two compliance notices relating to information on its website, munstertechcentre.ie, which the CCPC found would be likely to deceive or mislead consumers regarding their statutory cancellation rights. CocoBoutique (Hot Fox Ltd) was issued one compliance notice for similar concerns about cancellation rights information on its website.
CCPC Chairperson Brian McHugh said:
"Consumers have very strong rights and the CCPC is here to uphold them. These latest enforcement updates arise from CCPC inspections of supermarkets, petrol stations and other retailers, as well as investigations opened on the back of consumer complaints to our helpline.
In addition to our regular in-store and online inspections and ongoing investigations, CCPC officers are closely monitoring trader compliance with the legally binding commitments published today. Failure to adhere to the terms of these commitments will result in enforcement action."
