  • Cork club's passion and community spirit earns them the biggest reward in Lidl's nationwide LGFA scheme, coinciding with their third consecutive league promotion

Carrigaline Ladies Gaelic Football Club has claimed the top prize of €50,000 in the Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme 2025, beating hundreds of clubs nationwide in a competition that saw communities across Ireland rally behind their local teams.

The Cork club's victory comes at perfect timing, with their senior ladies team having just secured the division two league title, marking their third consecutive promotion. They'll now compete in division one from next year onwards, with the substantial prize money set to boost their facilities and development programmes.

The scheme, worth more than €80,000 in total prizes, saw Carrigaline compete against three other finalist clubs, each creating videos showcasing their passion for women's sport and outlining development plans for their communities. After a public vote, Carrigaline received the most overwhelming support from communities across the island of Ireland.

Three runners-up will each receive €10,000: Gráinne Mhaols Ladies Gaelic Football Club from Clifden, Co. Galway; Lurgan Ladies Gaelic Football Club from Virginia, Co. Cavan; and Navan O'Mahony's Ladies Gaelic Football Club from Navan, Co. Meath.

Tara O'Connor, Regional Managing Director for Munster at Lidl Ireland, said:

"We are delighted to finally announce the winners of this year's Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme. A huge congratulations to Carrigaline LGFA for showing how impactful grassroots support can be in encouraging young girls to engage with sport from an early age. This funding will be vital in upgrading facilities, equipment, and resources at Carrigaline to ensure that the next generation of female athletes can be championed within their clubs."

O'Connor also highlighted the connection to upcoming local events:

"Carrigaline LGFA embodies that community pride we see through our national partnership, and it's great to see this passion and excitement on the build up to the Passage West GAA Ladies Football Blitz 2025 that will be kicking off in September this year."

Trina Murray, President of the Ladies Gaelic Football Association, added:

"The Lidl Plus LGFA Rewards Scheme has grown in momentum year after year. We're delighted to see Carrigaline LGFA earn the top prize of €50,000. This initiative offers an incredible opportunity for communities to demonstrate their support while earning important funds for clubs."

The scheme, now in its fourth year, operates through the Lidl Plus app where registered shoppers collect digital stamps by spending €50 or more in stores. This year's programme saw more than 740 participating LGFA teams benefit from new jerseys worth over €380,000, bringing the total investment in local teams to more than €800,000 since the scheme began.

In 2024, Lidl procured more than €128 million in goods and services from Cork suppliers, demonstrating the retailer's commitment to the region. Since 2016, Lidl has invested over €10 million in the LGFA through its partnership, significantly transforming the perception and profile of women's sport in Ireland.

The timing of Carrigaline's win aligns perfectly with their remarkable on-pitch success, providing the resources needed to support their rapid rise through the divisions while inspiring the next generation of female athletes in the area.
