Bus Éireann Launches Enhanced Route 243 with Ten Daily Services to Cork
Bus Éireann boosts Route 243: Ten daily trips now connect Newmarket to Cork via Grenagh, Kanturk & Mallow, seven days a week.

- Bus Éireann has significantly upgraded its Route 243 service between Newmarket and Cork, introducing ten daily trips operating seven days a week, providing vital connections for communities including Grenagh, Kanturk, Mallow, Dromahane and Bweeng.
The enhanced service, launched yesterday, marks a substantial improvement in public transport connectivity for North Cork communities, addressing long-standing calls for increased frequency on this important regional route.
The Route 243 improvements form part of Bus Éireann's broader expansion under the National Transport Authority's Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan, which has added over 2.3 million kilometres to the national bus network. The timing couldn't be better for communities along the route, particularly as demand for public transport continues to surge across Cork.
Aled Williams, Senior Regional Manager, South:
"Bus Éireann is delighted to introduce these enhanced services between Cork and Newmarket, increasing transport options for passengers in Grenagh and the region. These improvements will positively impact passengers travelling for leisure, health, work and education."
The service expansion reflects remarkable growth in Bus Éireann's Cork operations, with the company delivering over 111.6 million passenger journeys last year alone. The increased frequency on Route 243 means residents no longer need to plan their days around limited bus times, whether they're heading to Cork for work, medical appointments, or a match at Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Local sports clubs have already welcomed the news, with members of Grenagh Camogie and LGFA club joining Bus Éireann driver Tadhg Buckley for the launch celebrations. The enhanced service will make it easier for young players to travel to training and matches across the county.
Williams emphasised the broader impact of the service improvements:
"Thanks to the NTA, through the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan we have added over 2.3 million kilometres to our network nationwide. Demand for our services in Cork is high and we have seen considerable growth in recent years."
The seven-day service ensures weekend connectivity, addressing a common complaint about rural transport links that often leave communities isolated outside traditional commuting hours. For Newmarket, Kanturk and smaller villages along the route, the enhanced timetable opens up new possibilities for both economic and social connections with Cork city.
"Bus Éireann continues to enhance connectivity across the country, delivering an affordable, reliable and sustainable bus service for communities throughout Ireland, helping to make life better," Williams added.
The Route 243 enhancement represents more than just additional buses; it's a recognition that reliable public transport is essential infrastructure for thriving rural communities. With ten daily services now available, North Cork residents have a genuine alternative to car travel, supporting both environmental goals and social inclusion.
