Border Counties to Receive UK Emergency Alert Test This Sunday

Road users travelling near the Northern Ireland border this Sunday afternoon will hear loud alarm sounds from their mobile phones as the UK tests its emergency alert system across Britain and Northern Ireland.

The Road Safety Authority has issued advice for drivers who may be caught off guard by the test alert on 7 September 2025. While customers on Irish mobile networks will not receive the message, those near border areas who roam onto UK networks during the test will experience the full alert: a loud siren-like sound, distinct vibration, and a message appearing on their phone screen.

The UK Emergency Alerts System, operational since March 2023, enables the British Government to warn the public about life-threatening emergencies such as extreme weather events. Sunday's test marks the second trial of the system, following its initial test in April 2023.

The alert will require acknowledgement before disappearing from phone screens, but the RSA emphasises that no action is needed from the public beyond dismissing the message.

For drivers, the timing could prove particularly concerning. The authority warns road users not to be startled by the sudden alarm sounds and, crucially, not to attempt to read or respond to the alert whilst driving or riding a motorcycle.

Road Safety Authority:

"If driving, continue to drive and do not respond to the noise or attempt to pick up the mobile phone and deal with the message."

The RSA reminds drivers that mobile phone use whilst driving remains prohibited, advising motorists to turn devices off, switch to airplane mode, put them on silent, or keep them out of sight whilst behind the wheel.

The alert system represents part of the UK's broader emergency preparedness infrastructure, designed to reach the public instantly during genuine crises. However, Sunday's test serves as a reminder for Irish drivers about the importance of maintaining focus on the road, even when technology demands attention.
