Plaque unveiled at Castlewest shopping centre today celebrating Ballincollig's 2024 Tidy Towns victory. Local officials praised volunteers for their dedication to community beautification.

A commemorative plaque has been unveiled at Castlewest shopping centre in Ballincollig to celebrate the town's victory in the 2024 Supervalu Tidy Towns competition. The plaque honours the community's dedication to maintaining a clean, beautiful and welcoming environment.
The unveiling ceremony took place on Sunday, May 18, 2025, attended by several distinguished guests including the Lord Mayor of Cork, Councillor Dan Boyle. In his address, the Lord Mayor praised the community's efforts, stating: "I extend my congratulations to Ballincollig and the Tidy Town Committee for their unwavering commitment and exceptional dedication to enhancing the beauty and cleanliness of our town. The victory was and is a testament to the hard work and community spirit that defines Ballincollig."
Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development, Jerry Buttimer TD, also commended the town's achievement:
"Ballincollig's success is a shining example of what can be accomplished when a community comes together with pride and purpose. The dedication of the volunteers here is truly inspiring, and it's a privilege to celebrate this well-earned recognition with them today," he said.
The Minister added:
"I know many of the volunteers and I want to thank them personally. I also know that the businesses and residents locally hugely appreciate the work, undertaken year after year, by these wonderful volunteers."
Tom Butler, Chairperson of the Ballincollig Tidy Towns Committee, expressed gratitude on behalf of the volunteers:
"The award is a reflection of the collective effort and passion of our community. We are deeply honoured to have received this recognition and continue to strive for excellence in keeping Ballincollig a wonderful place to live and visit," said Butler.
The Supervalu Tidy Towns competition, established in 1958, is an annual event that encourages communities across Ireland to improve their local environment and make their towns and villages more attractive places to live, work, and visit. Ballincollig's 2024 victory highlights the town's exceptional commitment to these values.
The 2025 competition was launched in Ballincollig Regional Park last March, with the town hoping to build on its success.
