Aware Seeks Volunteers Across Ireland to Support Mental Health Services
  • Mental health charity urgently recruiting for support roles as demand grows for vital depression and bipolar services

Aware, Ireland's leading mental health charity supporting those affected by depression and bipolar disorder, is urgently seeking new volunteers to join its nationwide support team. The organisation, which helps up to 40,000 people annually, needs compassionate individuals from across Ireland to help deliver its free services.

The charity currently operates with around 400 dedicated volunteers who provide crucial support through telephone helplines and group sessions. With mental health services under increasing pressure, Aware is expanding its volunteer network to meet growing demand.

No previous experience or qualifications are required, as comprehensive training and ongoing support are provided to all volunteers. The organisation welcomes people from all backgrounds, including those with personal experience of mental health challenges and others simply wanting to make a difference in their communities.

Two Key Volunteer Roles Available

The Aware Support Line operates 365 days a year from 10am to 10pm, providing telephone support to callers seeking help with mood-related conditions. Volunteers help individuals dealing with their own mental health or supporting family members and friends.

Support and Self Care Groups offer safe spaces for people living with depression and bipolar disorder to connect and share experiences. These groups meet virtually through Zoom and phone-in options, with in-person sessions available in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Kerry, and Waterford.

Volunteers are asked to commit approximately three hours per week and must be comfortable using technology. All applicants must be over 21, and remote volunteering is fully supported for those unable to attend in-person sessions.

Making a Real Difference

Stephen McBride, Director of Services at Aware:

"People volunteer for many different reasons. For some, it's a way to give back and make a meaningful difference. For others, it's an opportunity to learn new skills or deepen their existing knowledge. It's also a chance to be part of a supportive and caring community. Whatever your motivation, we'd love to hear from you."

The organisation's impact speaks for itself. In 2024, Support and Self Care Groups recorded nearly 7,000 visits across 22 weekly sessions, while the Support Line answered 15,235 unique calls throughout the year.

Aware has been recognised with the Investing in Volunteers Award, acknowledging excellence in volunteer management. The charity provides thorough training to ensure volunteers can respond empathetically and effectively within Aware's established framework.

Founded in 1985, Aware developed in response to the clear need for information, understanding and support for individuals diagnosed with depression or bipolar disorder, as well as their families.
