Article: Update to Infant Formula Recall - Additional SMA Alfamino Batch Affected

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has updated its recall of SMA Alfamino infant formula, adding an additional batch and correcting expiry date information from the original alert issued on 5 January 2026.

What Has Changed

Nestlé is now recalling batch 51700017Y1 (expiry June 2027) of SMA Alfamino 400g infant formula in addition to the previously announced batch. The company has also corrected the expiry date for batch 51210017Y1, which should read May 2027, not January 2027 as originally stated.

The recall affects specific batches of various SMA infant formula and follow-on formula products due to the possible presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by some strains of the bacterium Bacillus cereus. The toxin may be pre-formed in the food and is extremely heat resistant.

Affected Batches

Parents and caregivers should check their formula containers for batch codes:

For powdered formulas, batch codes are on the base of the tin or box

For ready-to-feed formulas, codes are on the base of the outer box and on the side or top of the container

The updated SMA Alfamino batches are:

  • Batch 51210017Y1 with expiry date May 2027
  • Batch 51700017Y1 with expiry date June 2027

The wider recall announced on 5 January 2026 affects multiple SMA products including Advanced First Infant Milk, Follow on Milk, Comfort, Little Steps First Infant Milk, and SMA Gold Prem 2. Full product details and batch codes are available in the FSAI food alert.

Health Information

To date, there have been no confirmed reports of illness associated with consumption of the affected products.

However, cereulide toxin can cause nausea and severe vomiting in infants and young children. Symptoms typically appear within five hours of consumption and usually last between six and 24 hours.

What Parents Should Do

Stop feeding the affected batches to infants or young children immediately. Do not use these products.

If no symptoms are displayed, there is nothing further you need to do. If you are concerned about the health of an infant or young child, contact a healthcare professional.

Returns and Refunds

Nestlé is advising customers who have purchased affected batches to contact them:

Via their online form at nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch, including a photo of the product and batch code

By calling their careline on 1800 931 832 (Ireland) or 0800 0 81 81 80 (UK)

Retailers have been instructed to remove the implicated batches from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale. Wholesalers and distributors must contact affected customers and provide recall notices.

This is a Category 1 recall, meaning immediate action is required.
