Additional SMA Infant Formula Batch Recalled Over Toxin Contamination Concerns

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has extended its ongoing recall of SMA First Infant Milk to include an additional batch following laboratory testing that revealed potential contamination with cereulide toxin. Parents and caregivers are advised not to feed the affected product to infants or young children.

This marks the fifth update to the recall, which initially began in January 2026. The latest batch identified is SMA First Infant Milk in 800g packs, with batch code 53390346AB and an expiry date of December 2027.

Nestlé, the manufacturer, has initiated the recall following recommendations from the European Food Safety Authority regarding analytical testing. The contamination stems from ARA oil manufactured in China, which was used as an ingredient in the base powder for infant formula production.

Health Risks and Symptoms

Cereulide is a heat-resistant toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. Consumption of foods containing this toxin can cause nausea and severe vomiting, with symptoms typically appearing within five hours. Illness usually lasts between six and 24 hours.

The FSAI emphasises that no confirmed cases of human illness linked to the affected products have been reported in Ireland to date.

What Parents Should Do

Parents, guardians and caregivers who have purchased this batch should not feed it to their infant or young child. If no symptoms are displayed, nothing further needs to be done. Anyone concerned about their child's health should contact a healthcare professional.

Retailers have been instructed to remove the implicated batch from sale and display recall notices at point-of-sale. Wholesalers and distributors must contact affected customers and provide recall notices to retail outlets.

Contact Information

Nestlé is advising customers who have purchased the affected batch to contact the company via its online form at www.nestle.co.uk/en-gb/getintouch by sharing a photo of the product and batch code, or by calling the careline on 1800 931 832.

The FSAI has published a complete list of all affected batches and products, along with detailed questions and answers on its website.
