Ireland's Broadband Boom: Over One Million Homes Now on Fibre as 5G Surges
Ireland records over 1 million fibre broadband connections as 5G subscribers jump 43% in a year, new ComReg figures show.
Ireland's broadband network has hit a major milestone, with fibre-to-the-premises connections surpassing one million subscriber lines, according to the latest figures from the Commission for Communications Regulation (ComReg).
The regulator's Quarterly Key Data Report for Q4 2025, covering October to December last year, shows fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) now accounts for 59% of all fixed broadband connections in Ireland, up from 51% in Q4 2024.
Overall fixed broadband subscriptions rose to 1.76 million, a 4% increase year-on-year, while FTTP subscriber lines reached 1,050,123, confirming fibre as the country's most popular broadband technology.
Gigabit broadband is now available at 90% of all premises nationwide, with FTTP coverage reaching 84%. Westmeath leads the country on both fronts, with FTTP coverage at 95% and overall Gigabit coverage at 96%.
In terms of take-up, 51% of premises where FTTP is available had an active fibre connection by the end of Q4 2025. Some 71% of fixed broadband customers are now on speeds of 500Mbps or above, up from 65% a year earlier, and 24% have subscribed to speeds of 1Gbps or more.
Data usage continues to climb. The average residential broadband customer used 563GB per month, an 11% increase on Q4 2024, while business users averaged 371GB, up 8%.
On the mobile side, total subscriptions, including mobile broadband and machine-to-machine connections, reached 10.8 million. 5G subscribers grew sharply to 2.8 million, a 43% increase since Q4 2024. The average mobile user made 150 minutes of calls, sent 32 texts, and used 21GB of data each month, with text messaging down 8% annually and mobile data usage up 13% year-on-year.
